GET INVOLVED

Other than supporting our work with a financial contribution, there are several ways to get involved and make a difference:

  • Join our Speakers Bureau. We’re looking for retired police officers and community leaders who will go into schools and talk directly to kids.

  • Introduce CPPO to a Title I School. If you are (or know) a teacher, administrator, or parent who sees the value in our work, we’d love to partner with your school.

  • Host a Lunch & Learn at your company, non-profit or civic organization, or faith community to engage in a conversation with one of our leaders.

  • Become an Intern and help with administrative, program, fundraising and communication activities.

For questions and more information on how to get involved, please contact CPPO's Principal Administrator Jenny Garcia at jgarcia@cppo.nyc.

FAQ

  • Community & Police Partnership Organization (CPPO) is a nonprofit 501c3 organization, founded in 2021, with a mission of healing the divide between local communities of color, and police in NYC by forging relationships between the community and police that work. Our school-based youth workshops aim to facilitate understanding, respect and cooperation between local citizens – particularly youth – and the Police, by building bridges that foster fair treatment of citizens by officers while maintaining peace. We do this by bringing retired NYPD officers into the classroom to engage in a conversation with young people of color about their interactions with the police – creating connections, understanding, trust and safety.

  • While our current programs are specifically designed for youth (middle and high schoolers), our vision is to forge positive relationships between ALL Community members and Police. We grow to serve the entire inner-city community and police department of NYC.

  • To our knowledge, CPPO is the only organization uniquely designed to bring youth and NYPD officers together to create authentic connections, understanding, trust and safety.

  • By 2030 CPPO aims to be widely known to the general public and NYPD as the best facilitator of improved community relations. This will be achieved by increasing our engagement with schools, community members and police officers year after year. CPPO centers will be created in key locations throughout the city to serve as accessible facilities to conduct workshops and host events.

In the short-term, we are building relationships with key NYPD and school staff to identify target precincts and school districts; develop and refine our curriculum; and to recruit experienced and dedicated program counselors. Our ambitious, but feasible, goal is to conduct workshops in all 80 high schools within our 12 target NYC precinct areas over the next 3-5 years.

  • The success of our program will be determined by the number of students and police officers that are engaged in our workshops as well as by the quality of that engagement. Quality of engagement will be measured by the change in behavior and attitudes identified during regular survey evaluations.

  • CPPO’s current FY2022 (Jan-Dec) budget is approximately $80,000, but as we expand our program and bring on full-time staff, our FY2023 budget is estimated to be $210,000.

CPPO is currently supported by the generosity of several individual donors, but as we grow we expect to diversify our funding with individual, local government, foundation, and corporate funding.

  • CPPO is currently led by three co-founders and board members, Jeffrey Smalls (President), Lerrod Smalls (Secretary), and Ted Crawford ((Treasurer).

During the 2022-2023 school year, the following full-time paid positions will be hired:
    • Director of Programs/Communications/Research
    • Youth Coordinator
    • Youth Counselors (2-10 staff members)

"After the CPPO’s presentation, we had a meeting to debrief with the young people that attended, and the feedback was so amazing that I walked out inspired. The student responses included “That was lit”, “I hope they come back”, “I learned so much”, “I never thought about how cops feel” and “those brothers care.”
